According to the Denver Post February 15, 2004, "more than 10 percent of new houses and 2 percent of Condominums and apartment buildings contructed in the United States last year were piped for central vacuum...The built-in systems' biggest selling points are convenience and clean air. They score high on both counts with carpet trade associations, green builders, and health organizations...In January, Built Green Colorado, a program of the Home Builders Association of Metropolitan Denver, added the built-in-systems to its checklist of items that make a home ecologically sound.
Energy efficiency sits atop that checklist. But as builders have sealed up houses tighter to prevent energy loss, they've compromised air quality.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, air that is breathed indoors-where Americans spend up to 90 percenct of their time-may be two to five times more polluted than the air outdoors.

As a result, the EPA and the American Lung Association recommend central vacuum systems, particularly for people with allergies.
So do researchers at the University of Californa at Davis School of Medicine. They recently reported dramatic improvement in allergy symptoms-among patients who lived for three months in a home with a central vacuum. Researchers said central vacuums did a much better job of lowering allergen levels than some conventional sweepers, which actually sent pollutants flying back into the air through bag leaks and exhaust."
